NOW

Now

The black one
is sleeping
stretched over three couch cushions,
tummy to the sun,
oblivious to the world.
But,
watch him closely,
his eyes glued shut,
limbs relaxed,
except,
his ears turn
rotate
from side to side
like a periscope.
Unpleasant noises
like the slap of the screen door
cause the tip of his tail
to twitch,
his left front paw
to curl
but the eyes
remain closed.
The ears turn
turn
then,
at the sound of the can opener
he is beside me
fused to my ankles
uttering his one syllable demand
NOW  NOW.
The master has spoken.

I was thinking about my dear old Nick and how he would curl around my ankles growling Now Now when there was something good in the kitchen.

  2. The sound of the knife sharpening steel got ours coming at a run. And you are so right about the Naow miaow when food is involved.

  3. You have captured this side of cats so well. Now! Now! is one word of English they all seem to know. And use.

And the ears - always moving except in deepest sleep.

  4. A perfect description of a "sleeping" cat awaiting his dinner.
