Using Wednesday's Words

Words for Wednesday is a weekly writing prompt designed to fire the creative juices and get us writing...anything....  This week the words are brought to us by River of Drifting Through Life (she of the new kitty) (you can find her in my sidebar).  Why not join in...use the words or just be inspired by them, write prose or poetry, fact or fiction, write today or any day at all.  The great thing is there are no rules and the people participating leave kind comments.

This weeks prompt words:
puffing, candles, confused, fishing, supreme, almost
and/or
eight, despicable, banner, shave, flowers and frowning.

here we go:

Grace was confused.  It seemed someone was singing Happy Birthday to her.  Eight candles on a pink and white cake.  Yes, that was right she thought.  Making a supreme effort and puffing as hard as she could she almost blew them all out.  One more and she could rest.  She was so tired.  Why was she so tired?  There, it went out.  The blessed soothing velvet blackness surrounded her once more.
Frowning she squinted as the light once again penetrated her vision.  There was her Daddy having a shave in the makeshift campground the family had set up after the fire had taken their family home.
“We’ll go fishing for our dinner Sunshine,” he said, “and you can pick some flowers for Mommy while Kenny and I clean our catch.”  Grace shook her head and winced at the pain.  Something wasn’t right.  What was it?  Kenny, Kenny died in a farm accident a long time ago.  She wasn’t a little kid anymore.  She’d reached the banner age of 75 just this past July.
She forced herself to think clearly, realised where she was and once again struggled to rise.  This time she made it to a sitting position and leaned back against the rough cellar wall.  “How was she going to get herself out of this despicable  mess?” she wondered.
“More to the point,” a gusty voice beside her said, “is how you got into this mess in the first place.”
“Oh Lordie” Grace moaned, “now I’m hearing voices.”

A cool and soothing draft passed across her burning forehead.

The Story Of My Life

Slightly Abbreviated
of course

Once I was small but now I'm not.
I guess that doesn't say a lot.
Once I rode bikes and ran with ease.
Could someone pass my walking stick please?
Once I had jobs and earned my way.
Now  a seniors pension is my pay.
Once I had fun.
Well, I still do.
It's not quite the same,
but it will do.
My eyesight was good, now it's not.
My memory also, is not so hot.
I remember what happened 10 years ago.
Dredging up yesterday is a little slow.
I rock and knit and read and write.
Yesterday's activities have long  since taken flight.
But that's okay, I'm here to say,
"At least I AM still here today.".

Poetry Monday

Poetry Monday was started by Diane of On The Alberta Montana Border (you can find her in my sidebar).  Diane thought Mondays needed a little jazzing up.  She was right.  Procrastinating Donkey (you can find the donkey in my side bar too) joined in.  I couldn't resist.  We need more players.   Please join in...write, read, critique, share your thoughts.   We love it.   This weeks theme is 'modern conveniences'.   I totally ignored the theme this week.  No, I lie, I didn't ignore it.  There just wasn\t a poem in me about modern conveniences this week.  We had a Lulu of a storm the other day.  That inspired me.

Night Sounds

night sounds
creaks and squeaks
little rattles
at the windows
sighing in the trees
then
a moment of silence
deep
profound
eerie
that wakes the sleeper
makes the listener
raise his head from off his bed
and strain, strain
to hear
what's coming next
drumming
thrumming
relentlessly humming
with wet fingers
strumming
the song of the rain
beating upon the roof
dripping from sodden branches
gurgling in the downspouts
smattering against the glass
joined
in the melody
by the wild
shriek
of the wind
the night song
the symphony
of the rain

Did you manage to come up with something for the weekly theme?  Did you free style like I did?  Let us know.  We want to read.

Cable

We've been having problems with our TV.  Well, not the TV itself, the reception from the cable company.  Some of the channels break up into little digital boxes, the sound comes and goes, the picture comes and goes...it's frustrating.  Anyway, we popped in to the cable office to explain our dilemma and were informed it's likely our cable box.  They rented us a new one.  Unfortunately it's not compatible with our 12 year old TV.  No, we are not going to replace a perfectly good TV.  We also wanted to add a few channels to our selection which a friendly young lady assisted with.  Upon returning home we found several channels we had before were now missing.  Now let me just insert here....we stood in a lineup at the cable office for 20 minutes and spent over half an hour at the counter getting all this sorted out (or unsorted).  There was no way I was going back if I could help it so I called up 'live chat' on the web site.  Now this was more like it I thought as we unravelled the sticky mess our reception had turned in to.  Great.  Now we were transferred to the technical side of things to sort out why our reception was broken on certain channels.  An appointment was made for a technician.  In the mean time we had been looking at the TV and still were missing some of the channels.  This young chap sorted out the channel problem and advised us that there was nothing wrong with our box.  Today, the technician came and replaced all the hardware and wires from the house to the pole then came to the door to advise us that he couldn't fix the problem.  It is a signal problem affecting the whole city.  Another tech will be out in five days or so to sort the matter out.  Good grief......if the whole city has been suffering from this issue and it has been going on for months, do you mean to tell us we are the only people who complained about it?  Really?  Now we have to go back to the cable company and wait in that never ending lineup to return the cable box we never needed in the first place.   Dontcha just love it?

Saturday's Snort

It's Saturday and I've got another good one for you.

Using Wednesdays Words

Words for Wednesday is a weekly writing prompt designed to get those creative juices flowing.  This week the words are brought to us by River of Drifting Through Life (you can find her in my sidebar).  Use the words to inspire you...
dynamic, longer, woods, mobile, landed, cellar
and/or
alerted, flying, demeanor, lights, smoothly and filled

here we go:

Grace didn't move smoothly anymore but she reminded herself daily at least she was still mobile.  This current predicament however, filled her with anxiety.
It had seemed like a great idea to explore the old Deveroux house in the woods.  Equipped with flashlight and camera she was in a grand mood.  One minute she was upright and the next, after a flying trip down the  cellar stairs, she landed headfirst on the old concrete floor.
There had been nothing to alert her to the fact that her  faithful Dynamic flashlight was going to fail.  It simply cut out midstep.  One misstep was all it took.
It's going to be a longer trip than usual to get back up those stairs she mused.  Her head pained her terribly as she tried to pull herself to her feet.  Her usual cocky demeanor failed her as she realized more than her head was paining her.  The effort to raise her head left her dizzy and gasping and then....blackness.

Has Anyone Heard?

Has anyone heard from Laura of Austanspace?   It's been a long long time since she last posted.  I'm worried about her.

Poetry Monday

It's Poetry Monday again....that day of the week when we write, read and appreciate the offerings of Diane (on the Alberta Montana Border) and Jenny O (Procrastinating Donkey) anyone else who cares to participate and me.......natch.  Many thanks to Diane for dreaming up this challenge.   The suggested theme this week is 'humour'.   It's not necessary to use the theme but it sometimes helps to have a jumping off point.
Anyhoo......here we go....

The Joker

A hearty chuckle
rumbled through the universe
among moons and planets
so diverse
sending them spinning
whirling and reeling
bumping against the Celestial ceiling,
shaking the walls, the foundations of the universe.
Hidden deep in that darkened spot
a protected container left to rot
shuddered,
toppled,
fell,
releasing a hideous blot.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
All of Heaven held its breath.
The silence was the sound of death.
One dared to ask
“What was in the flask?”
“A failed experiment.”
came the gloomy reply.
“The seed of human life.
left there to die."
“WHO TOLD ME THAT INFERNAL JOKE?”
One angel stepped forward,
his maker to  face.
“Good one wasn’t it Sir?”,
then, trembling, stepped back a pace.
The joke telling angel was gone in a blink.
“One good joke deserves another, don’t you think?”
“Lucifer has gone to Earth to dwell,
The seed of life landed there as well.”
One angel turned and nudged another .
“Who said God doesn’t have a sense of humour?”

Now....lets see what you can do.

It's Just A Thought

We are born of woman, grow in our strength, deteriorate and then the physical body collapses and rots.  At that point, are we then born of our own bodies and set free to roam the universe?

Camping

The littles and their folks are camping in our back yard.  They wanted to get a real camping spot but they had all been prebooked for the August Civic Holiday long weekend.  Thus...our back yard.  Yesterday and part of today it was cold, windy and raining and we were under a severe weather watch.  They insist they are having 'fun'.  There is hydro and water in the back yard as well as weeds and mosquitoes, the occasional skunk at night, bunnies and chipmunks and lots of birds that are early risers.  Still, they insist they are having 'fun'.  They can't cook outside so they are cooking in grandma's kitchen and washing their dishes in the dishwasher, playing games on grandma's computer, heating things in the microwave, watching tv and asking three million questions a minute.  Yes, they insist they are having 'fun'.   I am sweeping and wiping and tidying and serving and finding and........ I am NOT having fun.  Okay, I lie, I AM having fun.  Just don't tell anyone okay.

Saturday's Snort
